Si nul ne sait ce que peut un environnement, nul ne sait sans doute davantage ce que peut être de nos jours une philosophie de l’environnement. Aussi est-il souhaitable de faire dialoguer des philosophes d’ici et d’ailleurs, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, que nous avons tendance à tenir pour étrangers aux problèmes environnementaux parce que nous négligeons le plus souvent de les interroger sur ce chapitre où les questions et les réponses semblent connues d’avance. En tirant le portrait sur fond de crise (...) écologique de plus d’une quinzaine de penseurs différents (d’Edmund Husserl à Peter Sloterdijk, en passant par Martin Heidegger, Arne Næss et Gilles Deleuze), dont les voix et les visages parfois se mêlent, cet ouvrage voudrait modifier l’éclairage sous lequel ces penseurs sont perçus et, par là, contribuer à jeter une autre lumière sur ce que peuvent être les enjeux et les défis d’une pensée de l’environnement dont l’identité reste à construire. A trop vouloir en faire le discours écologique ne risque-t-il pas d’exaspérer, d’éveiller la méfiance et de décourager toutes les bonnes volontés? S’il y a un sens à vouloir préserver la planète pour les générations futures et à prendre soin de ne pas épuiser les ressources non-renouvelables, n’est-il pas tout simplement grotesque de parler de « devoirs » envers la nature, du « respect » qu’il lui serait dû, et à élaborer une « éthique environnementale », comme si les problèmes (...) environnementaux constituaient une nouvelle sorte de problèmes de moralité? L’objectif de ce livre est de prouver que cette approche des problèmes – qui s’est développée en Amérique du Nord depuis plus d’une trentaine d’années,n’a non seulement rien d’absurde, mais qu’elle dispose de moyens théoriques raffinés permettant de comprendre les enjeux de la crise écologique à laquelle nous sommes confrontés en s’interrogeant sur ses causes profondes. Les réflexions que les processus multiformes de dégradation de la nature ont pu susciter ces dernières décennies ont eu pour étrange effet de rétablir des frontières là où la crise environnementale elle-même, de par son caractère essentiellement global, les avait en premier lieu effacées. C'est ainsi que les différentes approches des problèmes environnementaux mises en oeuvre en Europe et dans les pays anglo saxons ont eu tendance à continuer leur chemin les unes à côté des autres, chacune n'ayant d'égards que (...) pour soi-même, sans véritablement réussir à se croiser et à tirer bénéfice de leurs différences mêmes. Le paradoxe veut que des oeuvres aussi importantes et novatrices que celles de Hans Jonas, Peter Sloterdijk et Bruno Latour, d'une part, et de Holmes Rolston, John Baird Callicott et Arne Næss, de l'autre, qui sont loin de s'ignorer au sein de leur communauté philosophique d'origine, semblent ne plus rien avoir à se dire passé la ligne des monts, le cours d'un fleuve ou l'espace d'une mer, comme si leur objet de réflexion n'était pas au fond le même. Tout se passe comme si un océan de pensée retenait à domicile, de chaque côté de l'Atlantique, les problématiques élaborées par l'éthique environnementale et celles issues des travaux des philosophes continentaux. En regroupant pour la première fois des contributions de penseurs américains et français portant sur des questions connexes, l'ambition du présent ouvrage est d'ouvrir un espace commun d'interlocution, et d'exposer, de manière synthétique, les enjeux actuels d'une philosophie de l'écologie. It also helps us to see his Critical revolution as an evolutionary turn, in which there is a growing awareness that the connection between substances must emphasize a real connection whose grounding does not depend in an indirect manner (...) on a transcendent being named God. Istorija politicke ekologije kako se odvija u Francuskoj tokom poslednje dve decenije moze da se protumaci kao da je orijentisana na stalno ispitivanje naucne ekspertize i iskljucivom odredjivanju akcija koje treba preduzeti za suocavanje sa ekoloskom krizom. Jedna takva evolucija je dobrodosla jer ona oslobadja prostor za razmisljanje i politicku akciju. Medjutim, aktuelna konfiguracija problema klimatskog zagrevanja je takva da preti da se izgubi ova prednost. Takodje potrebno je rekonfigurisati krizu ekoloskog misljenja u oblasti klimatskog zagrevanja da bi se dao (...) smisao onome sto nam se desava kao i konzistentnost sadasnjim akcijama i inicijativi. The aim of this paper is to determine how a Pyrrhonian considers the Law and can respond to Aristocles’ objection that a Pyrrhonian is unable to obey laws. First, we analyze the function of the Law in the 10th Mode of Aenesidemus, in order to show laws as a dogmatic source of value. But Sextus shows also that the Sceptic can live in a human society by following laws and customs, according to so-called ‘sceptical conformism’. In the light of Pyrrhonian (...) Hypotyposes 1.23–24 and Against the Mathematicians 11.162–164, I discuss the validity of the label ‘conformism’ in order to understand the nature of the political effect of the suspension of judgement. The real nature of the political position of Pyrrhonian Scepticism – that lack of commitment does not mean indifference to politics but rather a criticism of fanaticism and praise for political cautiousness – appears by comparison with the Scepticism of the New Academy. How could we acquire knowledge of a world that would be the work of an omnipotent creator? We reconstitute, in the light of the famous but controversial Cartesian theory of the "creation of eternal truths", the modal structure of such a world and seek to reconstitute analytically which epistemology should correspond to it. We then wonder if it is indeed such an epistemology that we find in the Meditations and Principles of Descartes.

Why is there a specific problem with biological individuality? Because the living realm contains a wide range of exotic particular concrete entities that do not easily match our ordinary concept of an individual. Slime moulds, dandelions, siphonophores are among the Odd Entities that excite the ontological zeal of the philosophers of biology. Most of these philosophers, however, seem to believe that these Odd Cases oblige us to refine or revise our common concept of an individual. They think, explicitly or tacitly, (...) that to be a living, evolutionary entity is to be a living individual. In this paper, we explore an alternative proposal: the variety and oddity of the forms of the living realm might be ontologically regimented through an increase in the categorial complexity of the living realm, by admitting, beside living individuals, living non-individuals or by acknowledging, more generally, that the evolutionary development of the living forms is not necessarily a process of building individuals, that life is not necessarily individuals-oriented. We claim that, from an ontological point of view, the spectacle of the living realm obliges us to take aggregativity seriously. (shrink)

En este artículo se desea mostrar la distinción que Jean-Luc Marion realiza entre fenómenos de derecho común y fenómenos saturados, se refleja de manera paradigmática su concepción de arte al presentar el ídolo como una modalidad saturada de los fenómenos; a su vez se presenta la diferencia entre los objetos construidos o los fenómenos constituidos por un sujeto que son presentados como principio y fundamento. Desde aquí se considera la pintura como una experiencia fenoménica de anamorfosis, donde la mirada del (...) espectador se somete al fenómeno, planteando la posibilidad de recibir aquello que se quiere ver. Además, busca mostrar cómo desde el arte, el proceso de la visibilidad es presentado como construcción del fenómeno que opera desde lo invisible. Se mostrará, entonces, cómo la reflexión artística de Jean-Luc Marion permite entrar en el corazón de su obra, observando cómo se puede modificar los conceptos de donación y de sujeto. (shrink)

Lacepède was a key figure in the French intellectual world from the Old Regime to the Restoration, sinc e he was not only a scientist, but also a musician, a writer, and a politician. His brilliant career is a good example of the progress of the social status of scientists in France around 1800. In the life sciences, he was considered the heir to Buffon and continued the latter’s Histoire naturelle, but he also borrowed ideas from anti-Buffonian scientists. He broached (...) many important subjects such as the nature of man, the classification of animals, the concept of species, and the history of the Earth. All these topics led to tensions in the French sciences, but Lacepède dealt with them in a consensual, indeed even ambiguous way. For example, he held transformist views, but his concept of evolution was far less precise and daring than Lamarck’s contemporaneous attempts. His somewhat confused eclecticism allowed him to be accepted by opposing camps of the French scientific community at that time and makes his case interesting for historians, since the opinions of such an opportunistic figure can illuminate the figure of the French intellectual better than more original works could do. In turn, Lacepède’s important social and scientific position gave his views a significant visibility. In this sense, his contributions probably exerted an influence, in particular with regard to the emergence of transformist theories. (shrink)

The article aims at assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the objections to Habermas’s epistemic conception of democracy raised by Thomas McCarthy in some of his essays. The author defends two ideas. First, he contends that McCarthy is mistaken in believing that democratic debates would not be a matter of consensus. In this regard, two arguments are raised, showing that the search for agreement and consensus by citizens in public forums can hardly be dismissed and that consensus can be invested (...) with many meanings in democratic life. Secondly, however, the author approves McCarthy when challenging Habermas’s epistemic claims regarding his theory of democracy. Not all democratic deliberations can be analysed in epistemic terms, in particular, debates on values. The pitfalls of any epistemic account of this form of deliberation are pointed out in the end of the essay. (shrink)

Apportent-ils des lumières au plan moral qui pourraient contribuer à éduquer les élus et les citoyens? Cet article se penche sur les débats récents entourant ces questions dans la philosophie anglo-américaine. J’entends évaluer les principaux arguments qui ont été avancés pour soutenir l’idée que l’art et la littérature peuvent contribuer à l’éducation morale, mais aussi (...) pour réfuter les critiques, nombreuses, qui ont été formulées à l’endroit d’une telle perspective. Trois objections, en particulier, retiennent mon attention : les objections conséquentialiste, épistémique et normative. (shrink)

It is often suggested that emotions are intrinsically normative or that they have conditions of correctness that are intrinsic. In order to assess this thesis, I consider whether the main argument in favor of the normativity of belief can be transposed to emotions. In the case of belief, the argument is that when we wonder whether to believe that p, we acknowledge that we must abide by some norms. This is understood as showing that these norms are intrinsic to the (...) concept of belief. In contrast, it appears that no similar constraint applies when we deliberate about emotions. Indeed, I argue that extrinsic norms are suf ficient to understand thoroughly the normativity of emotions. Therefore, the postulation of intrinsic norms or correctness conditions seems unmotivated. Worse, if emotions had intrinsic norms or correctness conditions, they would manifest themselves when we wonder whether an emotion is appropriate in this or that context. But they don’t. (shrink)

For some years now, the French social sciences –sociology in particular– have been undergoing a period of great tension that was essentially characterised by attacks on the “ideological” –and therefore unscientific– character of the discipline and its vulnerability to the invasion of “decolonialism” from the United States. However, most of these accusations are based on approximations, errors, and misunderstandings that need to be corrected in order to distinguish between, for example, the “decolonialism” denounced by neo-republicans –be they political or academic– (...) and “decolonial thought”, which springs from a complex history and whose critical character stems from an epistemological opposition to abstract universalism of the Western type. A quick overview of certain non-Western academic movements shows that a large part of counter-hegemonic thought has adopted a critical stance in order to be able to envisage a new universalism. This book aims to re-evaluate the relations between two major ideologies that have been increasingly contested in recent years, yet continue to be invoked or rejected as foundational systems for political thought or action. With socialism conceiving of itself as an alternative to economic liberalism, the two systems of thought emerged partially in opposition to each other. However, this book seeks to redefine their specificities and the way in which they have not only opposed each other but drew on common (...) notions or paradigms to become both competing and complementary systems of thought and practices. With contributions from eminent political scientists and historians of political and economic thought, the book examines how the polarisation of debates and politicisation of concepts such as property, freedom, the individual, or the State, serve to construct the adversary and form a basis for political commitment. Offering an interdisciplinary assessment of the relation between liberalism and socialism, the authors help to make sense of current debate on individual freedom, political obligation and the changing role of the State. Providing an innovative perspective, this edited collection will be of interest to scholars and students researching political and economic thought, history or science, as well as anyone seeking to understand current developments affecting Western societies, and their past, present, and future ideologies. In this paper, I propose a reductive account of intentions which I call a gate-based reductive account. In contrast with other reductive accounts, however, the reductive basis of this account is not limited to desires, beliefs and judgments. I suggest that an intention is a complex state in which a predominant desire toward a plan is not inhibited by a gate mechanism whose function is to assess the comparison of our desires given the stakes at hand. To vindicate this account, (...) I rely on several considerations: the similarity between epistemic feelings and the feeling of being decided that tells us that we have an intention, the necessity of postulating a gate mechanism to explain our hesitating behavior, and the tight link that exists between the realization of our actions and our desires. In agreement with non-reductivists, I nevertheless acknowledge that intentions encompass plans, although I emphasize that the planning capacity must also be dependent on our motivational life and the general evaluative mechanisms that explains our emotions. Les recherches poursuivies par les membres de l'école de Francfort depuis la seconde moitié des années quatre-vingt se signalent primordialement par l'intérêt porté au problème général des conditions d'application de l'éthique de la discussion au domaine du droit et de la politique. En témoignent les recueils publiés récemment par Karl-Otto Apel, en particulier Diskurs und Verantwortung et Zur Anwendung der Diskursethik in Politik, Recht und Wissenschaft, ainsi que l'ouvrage volumineux de J. Habermas consacré à la théorie du droit, Faktizität und (...) Geltung. Bien que non définitive, cette orientation de recherche n'en est pas moins suffisamment élaborée à l'heure actuelle pour permettre une évaluation. Le but du présent article sera plus spécialement de soumettre à un examen critique la voie de solution propre apportée par Apel à ce problème. Une thèse centrale sera défendue: celle suivant laquelle les difficultés que présente l'application de l'éthique communicationnelle au monde du droit et de la politique ne peuvent être entièrement solutionnées dans le cadre restreint de la théorie morale, mais exigent la transition à une théorie du droit et de la démocratie. Jean-Paul Sartre is not an influential author in the work of Jean-Luc Marion. Yet, as is the case for the phenomenology of givenness, Sartre thinks love in terms of God. However, for Marion, Sartre is exemplary of those authors who have remained prisoner to metaphysics and to thinking God as the causa sui. By comparing the Sartrean and Marionian conceptions of love, the author shows that both are based on radically different conceptions of divinity, demonstrating at the same time how (...) the link between God and being determines human love. This paper presents the hypothesis that concept possession is sufficient and necessary for self-consciousness. If this is true it provides a yardstick for gauging the validity of different research paradigms in which claims for self-consciousness in animals or human infants are made: a convincing demonstration of concept possession in a research subject, such as a display of inferential reasoning, may be taken as conclusive evidence of self-consciousness. Intuitively, there appears to be a correlation between intelligence in animals and the existence (...) of self-consciousness. I present three discussions to support the hypothesis: an analogy between perception and conception, where both are self-specifying; an argument that any web of concepts will always include the self-concept; and a fresh interpretation of Bermũdez showing how his theory of non-conceptual content provides strong support for the concept possession hypothesis. This paper proposes an essentially theoretical reflection on initial training, a reflection based on four fundamental concepts: professional development, professional identity, well-being and strengths of character. More specifically, recognizing the complexity of the teaching profession, the authors argue that the teacher training in Quebec gives too little room for self-reflection. According to them, this reflection should be based on a search for meaning in terms of a vision of well-being. Positive psychology research on strengths of character may provide useful avenues (...) for rethinking teacher education. (shrink)

The basic premise of the host‐defense theory is that genomic imprinting, the parent‐of‐origin expression of a subset of mammalian genes, derives from mechanisms originally dedicated to silencing repeated and retroviral‐like sequences that deeply colonized mammalian genomes. We propose that large clusters of tandemly‐repeated C/D‐box small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) or microRNAs represent a novel category of sequences recognized as “genomic parasites”, contributing to the emergence of genomic imprinting in a subset of chromosomal regions that contain them. Such a view is supported (...) by evidence derived from studies of the imprinted snoRNA‐ and/or miRNA‐encoding Dlk1‐Dio3, Snurf‐Snrpn, Sfbmt2, and C19MC domains. While adding a new piece to the challenging puzzle of mammalian genome history, this hypothesis also reinforces the notion that dissecting the features and molecular mechanisms that discriminate between “foreign” and “endogenous” sequences is of crucial importance in the field of mammalian epigenetics. Our contribution concerns the continuous training of teachers that will be forming future teachers during their traineeship. It aims to describe how the professional development of the trainees’ coaches, both the training supervisors as well as the supervisors form the trainees’ schools, was used during a course proposed by a university and during meetings where practices were shared by the participants. In this manner, we identified the ideal moments for development of the trainees, as well as the most important levers (...) for the transformation of the coaches. We paid particular attention to the reflexive contract co-defined by the group, as well as to the principle of social moderation at the heart of the collaborative group’s dynamic. (shrink)
